Waysake

Your trips, kept.

A travel drive for a couple or a family. Your photos sort themselves into trips and stops on a globe, and everything stays at home, on your own machine.

Free and open source under AGPL-3.0. No account, no cloud.

A silent 50-second tour. Years of trips sit in one messy camera roll; Waysake reads where and when each photo was taken and sorts them into five trips on a globe. Then a page for one trip, the guessing game, and two people watching the same trip together from two screens.

Years of trips, lost in a camera roll.

Thousands of photos in one endless scroll. The mountains you hiked sit between a screenshot and a parking ticket, and nobody remembers anymore which summer was Sicily.

Every photo already knows when and where it was taken. Waysake reads that, groups your photos into trips and stops, and puts them back on the map. You only confirm.

Every trip, on one globe.

Each trip draws its route on a quiet grey globe, stop by stop, in its own colour. The colour comes from the trip’s cover photo, rounded to a palette of ten, like album covers.

The Waysake globe on a computer: five trips across Europe, each route in its own colour, with a legend and a row of trip covers below.

Ten colours, each always shown with a name, so two trips never depend on colour alone to tell apart. Pick one by hand whenever you like.

  1. Coral
  2. Amber
  3. Moss
  4. Pine
  5. Lagoon
  6. Azure
  7. Indigo
  8. Lilac
  9. Raspberry
  10. Slate

A page for each trip.

The cover melts into the page. Dates, countries and the road between your stops; the days, photos and kilometres. Below, every stop with its photos and its map.

Open any photo full screen, react to it, write the story of the trip before you forget it, play a slideshow or make a postcard to share.

The page of the trip “Italy, Slovenia & Croatia”: a mountain lake cover that fades into the page, the route Italy, Dolomites, Slovenia, Croatia, and the figures 21 days, 70 photos, 4 stops, 1,058 km travelled.

Play with your memories. Then watch them together.

Where was it? shows a photo from your trips: drop your pin on the map, and the closer you are, the more points. In Investigation mode, one of you suggests a place for a photo that has none, the other confirms: agree within 25 km and the place is saved for good.

Watch together sends the other person an invitation. One leads, the other follows the same photos on their own screen, live, and reactions fly across both.

A round of “Where was it?”: a harbour photo next to a map of Istria, with the player’s pin 43 km from the real place.
Watching together: three glasses raised in a toast, shown full screen, with a heart reaction from the other person.

Countries, in order. Every country you’ve discovered together, in the order you first went.
A colour for each trip. Taken from the cover photo, rounded to the palette of ten. Pick one by hand whenever you like.
React to any photo. Full screen, on your own or while you watch together.
An Android app that keeps the GPS
Send a whole period from your phone, “since the last import” or chosen dates, with the places intact. On iPhone, add Waysake to your Home Screen from Safari.
Photos without a place
A screen to set a place on a whole day or a moment at once, so nothing stays lost.
A notebook
The trips you dream of and the memories you want to write down.
Countries, in order
Every country you’ve discovered together, in the order you first went.
English and French
The whole app, in both languages.
Profiles, not accounts
Everyone picks their name; photos remember who took them.

At home, not in the cloud.

Waysake runs on a computer you own. Your photos never leave it, there is no account to create, and this project collects nothing about you.

Any machine at home
A PC, a Mac, a Raspberry Pi or a NAS. One Docker image, for amd64 and arm64.
A household password
Asked once per device. Then everyone just picks their profile.
Private on your phones
On your Wi-Fi, or anywhere over HTTPS through Tailscale. Don’t expose it bare on the internet.
One folder to back up
Originals, thumbnails and the database live together. Waysake also keeps a daily snapshot of its database.
Open source, AGPL-3.0
Use it, change it, share it. If you host a modified version for others, you publish its code.
No tracking
No analytics in the app, and none on this site: no cookies, no trackers.
Coming soon: Immich integration Immich organizes your photos. Waysake keeps the journey.

Install it in a few minutes.

Nothing to compile: the image is ready for PC, Mac, Raspberry Pi and NAS.

  1. Install Docker

Docker Desktop on a PC or a Mac, Docker Engine on Linux, a Raspberry Pi or a NAS.

  2. Start Waysake

In a terminal, with your own names and a password of your choice:

    Terminal
    mkdir waysake && cd waysake
    curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Mariusfaitducode/waysake/main/docker-compose.yml
    WAYSAKE_PROFILES="Alex, Sam" WAYSAKE_PASSWORD="choose a password" docker compose up -d

Photos and the database go to ./atlas-data next to the file, or wherever WAYSAKE_DATA points. Waysake restarts with the machine.

  3. Open it

Go to http://localhost:8420, or the machine’s address on your network. For your phones, anywhere and in HTTPS: tailscale serve --bg 8420. To update later: docker compose pull && docker compose up -d.

Set it up with an AI assistant.

Not at ease with a terminal? Paste this into Claude Code or any assistant that can run commands on your machine. It explains each step before running it.

Prompt
Help me install Waysake, a self-hosted travel photo drive, on this computer. Read its README first: https://github.com/Mariusfaitducode/waysake

Explain each command in one sentence before you run it, and wait for my OK before installing anything.

1. Check whether Docker is installed and running. If it isn't, tell me how to install it for my system.
2. Ask me for: the names of the people in our household, a household password, and the folder where our photos should live.
3. Create a "waysake" folder, download docker-compose.yml from the repository, and write a .env file with WAYSAKE_PROFILES, WAYSAKE_PASSWORD and WAYSAKE_DATA.
4. Start it with "docker compose up -d", then check that http://localhost:8420/api/health answers.
5. If I want to use it from our phones, help me set up Tailscale and run "tailscale serve --bg 8420". Never expose Waysake directly to the internet.
6. Finish by telling me the address to open and how to update later.

Built by a couple, with Claude Code.

Waysake is developed with Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding assistant, and most commits are co-signed by Claude.

It isn’t code generated and left behind. My partner and I use it for our own trips, and I read and test every change on our own photo library. The server is covered by more than 200 automated tests, and sensitive changes (sign-in, import, files) go through a dedicated security review. Issues and criticism are welcome on GitHub.
